December is Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month

According to FBI crime reports, approximately 8.1 million people were victims of identity theft in 2010,. Identity thieves are ruthless and shrewd and, worse, without conscience. December is National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month, and thus a very good time to learn to protect yourself.

Although all types of fraud declined in 2010 compared to 2009, new account fraud was responsible for the greatest fraud amount ($17 billion). New account fraud, in which accounts have been opened without the victim’s knowledge, is harder to detect and is the most likely to severely impact the victims.
