Dr. John Hogan CHA CMHS CHE CHO               Overview for Consulting

As a career business professional and educator who has held senior leadership with administrative responsibility in several organizations involving both academic and entrepreneurial enterprise, I have demonstrated competencies as a strong leader, relationship builder, general problem solver and mentor.

My professional experience includes over forty  years in operations, service, sales and marketing, training, management development and asset management on both a single and multi-property basis, including service as Senior Vice President of Operations in a specialty medically oriented hotel brand for eight years.  My background includes teaching college level courses as an adjunct professor at three different colleges and universities over a twenty-year period, while managing with Sheraton, Hilton, Omni and independent hotels.

My consulting work is based on my hotel industry experience, training, education, experience as a hotel company trainer and university level hotel school instructor, active participation in organizations supporting the hotel industry, frequent author and a reasonable degree of professional certainty.

The approach used:
  1. Discuss perceived problem with client to ascertain concerns and possible solutions
  2. Prepare a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats)
  3. Identify and Focus on the strengths
  4. Recommend at least two options on growing the strengths and addressing the weaknesses
Real-World Case Study - A Small Brand Name of Hotels (common ownership) facing challenges in staff turnovers, service levels, and low market penetration.
  1. Discussion revealed little initial or ongoing training for line-level staff and inconsistency in marketing practices across the brand.
  2. SWOT analysis identified several problem areas that were easily remedied and practices that required in-depth focus.
  3. Strengths included:  a caring staff needing training and reinforcement and a committed sales team needing uniform guidelines.
  4. Recommendations included:  several approaches to line-level training and establishment of brand coordinated marketing protocols.
Results:  Guest satisfaction scores improved and market position increased over a 6month period.  Ownership elected to sell the brand to an international group at a fair price to all involved.
